Tomoya Okazaki (岡崎朋也, Okazaki Tomoya?) is the main protagonist of the Clannad visual novel and anime series.

Appearance[]

Tomoya is a young man with blue hair. His hairstyle and facial expression gives a delinquent vibe to his fellow schoolmates. It is noted by Tomoyo that he is rather handsome.

Character Outline[]

At the beginning of the series, Tomoya is a 17-year-old third-year student of Hikarizaka High. He deeply resents his town Hikarizaka due to the bad memories he experienced while living in it.

Ever since his mother, Atsuko, died in a car accident when he was young, Tomoya Okazaki has lived with his alcoholic father, Naoyuki Okazaki, with whom he argues with constantly. He resembles his father having tan skin, spiky blue hair, and deep blue eyes.

Tomoya used to be a basketball player in middle school, until he received a permanent injury during a fight with his father, in which he was brutally slammed into a wall and the impact dislocated his right shoulder. Since then, he could no longer lift his right arm higher than his shoulder, and was forced to quit basketball soon afterwards. After that incident, Tomoya's relationship with his father became very distant as he continued to hold a grudge against him. He began to view life cynically and came to be seen as a delinquent at school.

He is best friends with Youhei Sunohara and is a childhood friend of Kotomi Ichinose. As he progresses through high school, he meets many new friends, such as Kyou, Ryou, Tomoyo, Fuko, and of course, Nagisa.

He is a cynical and sarcastic delinquent who has a tendency of always arriving late to school, skipping classes during the day and staying out all night, hanging with Sunohara in his room. Tomoya enjoys having company as well as playing lighthearted pranks on people, especially Sunohara or Fuko. Occasionally, he teases Nagisa or the Fujibayashi twins.

Despite Tomoya's seemingly antisocial ways, he is a sociable and protective friend who cares deeply for all of his friends, especially Nagisa, and loves solving their problems. He is either unaware that some of the girls at his school show interest in him, or, most likely, pretends not to know. Tomoya is shown to think deeply about his life, though he does not frequently voice his thoughts.

Though Tomoya is a delinquent, he does not go around looking for fights. He is usually somewhat quiet and silent, being more approachable than a stereotypical delinquent. However, when he does get into a brawl, he is shown as a very tough fighter.

Clannad[]

The major story in Clannad is about Tomoya learning about family and friends that will slowly change his cynical and negative outlook on life.

In the episode On the Hillside Path Where the Cherry Blossoms Flutter, Tomoya, a third-year student, meets a girl named Nagisa Furukawa while walking to school and befriends her, thus setting off the main story.

Tomoya begins interacting with her along with Kyou, Ryou, Tomoyo, Fuko, and Sunohara; discovering their history and his own forgotten memories in the process. He also meets Nagisa's parents: Akio Furukawa and Sanae Furukawa, who work at their self-owned bakery, Furukawa Bread. He begins to hold romantic feelings for Nagisa towards the end of the first season of the Clannad anime.

Tomoya canonically ends up with Nagisa in the Clannad visual novel and its ~After Story~ arc, as well as in the anime. He also has alternate timeline counterparts that end up with Tomoyo and Kyou, respectively, in the both the visual novel and anime. Tomoya also has the option of ending up with Fuko, Kotomi, or Yukine in the VN.

~After Story~[]

In the ~After story~ saga, Tomoya has helped many people such as Sunohara, Misae and Yukine settle their problems and is about to graduate high school. His love for Nagisa grows stronger all the while. After they both graduate, Tomoya marries Nagisa. With the help of Yusuke Yoshino, he gets a job as an electrician. Soon after, Nagisa becomes pregnant with Ushio. During those months, Tomoya takes care of Nagisa, until she one day she suddenly grows ill. During childbirth, she gives birth to Ushio, but passes away shortly afterwards.

Afterwards, Tomoya spirals into a five-year depression, barely interacting with his daughter, who is left in the care of Akio and Sanae. After a few arguments with Akio and plenty of encouragement from Sanae, he takes Ushio on a trip. They meet Tomoya's grandmother, who tells Tomoya about his father's struggles after his own wife died. Tomoya realizes that he's putting Ushio through the same kind of relationship he and his father had, and vows to becomes a better father to Ushio. They return to Hikarizaka, where Tomoya finally apologizes to his father, and introduces Ushio to him. His father accepts Tomoya's apology and claims that his role as a father is over. Afterwards, Tomoya's dad moves back in with his own mother, and Tomoya receives an orb of light, noticed only by Ushio.

Tomoya becomes a better father to Ushio soon afterwards, making happy memories with her. Ushio returns to school and brings Tomoya together with his old friend, Kyou, whose dream was to become a kindergarten teacher during their high school years. Kyou explains that a sports event is approaching soon. As Tomoya and Akio ready themselves for the event, Ushio is suddenly stricken with the same devastating sickness that took the life of her mother, Nagisa. Tomoya takes it upon himself to remain with her until the sickness subsides. The sickness, however, does not pass, and Tomoya begins to lose hope.

Months later, winter approaches and Tomoya is still looking after the sick Ushio, who requests to take a trip to the field of flowers that they'd entered once before. Tomoya, unable to bear disregarding his only daughter's wishes in return for her health, eventually agrees and begins the trip with her. Halfway through the walk to the northern field, it begins to snow, and Ushio suddenly collapses. Tomoya catches Ushio and holds her close to him. As he holds her, with her last breath, she says "Daddy. I love you".

Tomoya's daughter dies in his arms. As he succumbs to the pain and grief of losing both Nagisa and Ushio, he collapses into the snow. It is theorized that he dies as he collapses, as he stops moving, crying, and seemingly, breathing.

After this event, Ushio is revealed to be the girl in the Illusionary World. The robot assisting the girl in the Illusionary World is revealed to be another form of Tomoya. Tomoya, in possession of enough light orbs to turn back the hands of time, is taken back to the day when he first met Nagisa under the sakura trees. At first, Tomoya reluctantly doesn't speak to her; believing that it was by his fault that she and Ushio died. (Although without him, Ushio would essentially have never existed.)

However, at the last moment, Tomoya runs to her, realizing he doesn't want to her to let her walk past him the day that they had met. He tearfully embraces her, discovering that she, too, remembered everything that they had. Nagisa tells Tomoya to never regret the time they spent together, and how happy they were, no matter what happens. He kisses her hands, thanks her, and hugs her one last time before whiting out. Tomoya returns to the day that Nagisa is in labor, but this time Nagisa survives, as does Ushio, who never suffers the sickness her mother had. This is because the wish Tomoya made also cured her of her disease. Tomoya lives happily ever after with his daughter and wife.

Episode 23 seemingly takes place during their Junior Year. Tomoya hadn't met Nagisa yet, and everything is in the same timeline.

In Episode 24, Tomoya tells Ushio and Fuko a story about before Ushio was born and recaps the events of series. When Ushio and Fuko fall asleep, he states that he has a vague memory of Nagisa and Ushio dying, while not stating that he may have died. Afterward, Nagisa calls for them to go home and Ushio and Fuko wake up and leave with Tomoya.

The final episode of the ~After Story~ arc takes place in an alternate timeline in which Tomoya never meets Nagisa. Similar to the final episode of the previous season in which Tomoyo and Tomoya become a couple; Kyou attempts to set up Tomoya with Ryou, and Tomoya accepts, unsure of his own feelings. As Ryou and Tomoya begin to date,  Kyou finds herself increasingly at odds with her feelings. Tomoya comes to realize he doesn't have the same feeling for Ryou that she has for him, though he tries to hide this from her as well as himself.

As Tomoya comes to realize his own feelings for Kyou, Kyou reluctantly pushes Tomoya away as not to hurt Ryou. Ryou, however, accepts that Kyou loves Tomoya, although Kyou struggles to do this herself. Tomoya admits to Ryou he doesn't feel the same way as her, and they break up. Begrudgingly, Kyou finally admits her feelings for Tomoya, and tell him that she loves him. Tomoya accepts hers in return, and they begin dating. The show ends as Kyou and Tomoya kiss. Kyou says that she loves him, and they remark that summer is coming.
